Amazingly enough, the odds of going from a gold coin to a house in 14 trades are nil.

Studid is as studpid does. A few of those trades were illogical at best. A snowmobile for a portable generator???? The house so the town has the rights to hold auditions for a movie part????

And I am sure he still owes the town the applicable property taxes!!!

If he was the average schmoe that would have been his achilles heel

But he has been thinking outside the box all along.

He now has media and advertisers from every possible outlet begging for face time.

He can alway trade the taxes into a lien certificate some investor will glady accept.

That is a pretty cool dude, right there.
Nothing like capitalizing on a cult of personality.
There were no "stupid" trades as everyone got precisely what they wanted.

Many of these trades were because people knew what was going on. This will not happen if you just trade some crap. Cool story, but a 1 in one billion event.

BINGO

The turning point in the journey was when he built the website.

That is when it took on a life of its own.

I hope he continues to parlay it forward.

Didn't this happen about 4 years ago?

I think I could do it in one trade - as long as it was in Detroit....

Frankly, this has already been done in the past on a much, much larger scale. Anyone heard of an organization called "The Fed"? Yeah, well apparently they've been trading useless pieces of paper for trillions of dollars for almost a hundred years, and they're still getting away with it to this day.

I for one wouldn't trade a paper clip for a house in Detroit - paper clips are useful! But, if you gave me a pistol and ammo I might take the house!:sarcasm:

Re: Man barters from a Red Paper Clip to House (free and clear) in 14 trades

Blah blah blah.

In no meaningful sense did he make a series of trades from paperclip to house, as the story tries to maintain. His initial idea and efforts got some buzz going, and a series of folks saw media opportunities, and eventually a small town gave him a small house to get in on that. Coverage did not mention the thousands he must have spent on travel, etc.

Don't get me wrong -- it is an interesting story and the guy deserves credit for the idea and for his initiative in pursuing it. But to say he traded up from a paperclip to a house is a bunch of hooey.
